How to Become a Tattoo Artist

Learning to tattoo takes sustained practice and feedback. Start by understanding the training arrangement you are considering, the work expected between lessons and how your progress will be assessed.

Build your drawing and observation habits

Keep a sketchbook of original work and practise developing an idea through several versions. Save the revisions as well as the final design. When asking for feedback, explain what you were trying to achieve and where you struggled. This gives a tutor or prospective mentor something specific to review.

Compare the learning arrangements

Look at online courses, in-person training and studio apprenticeship arrangements. Ask who reviews your work, how to contact them and what practice is expected. Confirm the course content, equipment options, access terms and assessments before enrolling.

For an in-person option, confirm the venue and dates before arranging travel. For online study, work out when you can make time for lessons and practice rather than considering video watch time alone.

Practise with a clear purpose

Follow the course instructions for each exercise and keep records of your practice. Ask for feedback on specific areas, make the requested changes and compare the next attempt with the earlier one. A repeated exercise becomes more useful when you know what you are trying to improve.

Build an honest learning portfolio

Separate drawings, synthetic-skin practice and any other work so viewers understand what they are seeing. Use clear photographs and explain your role in each piece. A small selection that shows thoughtful development is more informative than a large collection without context.

Check what completion means

Read the assessment requirements for your course and ask what its certificate records. Our certification guide explains the questions to ask. Completing training is not, by itself, proof that every requirement for your intended workplace or services has been met.

Plan the next stage with advice

Discuss your progress and remaining development needs with your tutor or mentor. Confirm the requirements for your intended location, premises and services with the relevant authority and insurer. Do this before making commitments based on an assumption that one course automatically covers everything.
